While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting “onboarded” everywhere, real people in the tech industry are getting fired from their jobs.
The latest episode of job cuts came from tech giant Google after firing hundreds of employees from its sales team globally.
According to a report by Business Insider, Google’s senior vice president, Philipp Schindler, says the latest layoffs only affect the company’s Large Customer Sales (LCS) unit.
This means that Google is dissolving the team in charge of selling ads to large businesses.
On the other hand, the Google Customer Solutions team (GCS) that sells ads to smaller businesses will be retained as the “core” ad sales team.
Meanwhile, this recent layoff on the LCS unit started back in October 2023 but only affected a few employees at that time.
While speaking with the press, a Google chief said that the tech giant goes through a process of restructuring its team yearly to ensure its Ads customers get the best service.
But an interesting coincidence is Google’s recent launch of several new AI tools for retailers just about the same time as the layoffs.
Recall that Google said it was dissolving its LCS team to focus more on the GCS team that sells ads to smaller clients.
And now, the company is launching new AI tools made for small retailers to improve the online shopping experience.
Among the new tools is a generative AI-powered chatbot designed for retailers to integrate into mobile apps and websites.
Could it be that the new AI tools are part of why Google is restructuring its sales team globally?
